1950s Football Programmes
The 1950’s featured 3 world cup’s, and in 1954 and 1958 a programme was produced for each game unlike previous tournaments. The 1954 programmes featured the tournament logo on the cover with the tournament details. The 1958 programmes also featured the tournament logo but were on a black background, with individual game details. The cover for the final in 1958 was a white background and featured both finalists, Brazil and Sweden’s flags.
1958 was a tragic year for Manchester United after suffering the Munich air disaster, the programmes from this season (1957-58) are popular with Manchester United collectors and in particular the first game following the tragedy , an F.A Cup tie versus Sheffield Wednesday. The programme had many different features from the standard United programme, on the front page was a message from the chairman titled ‘United will go on’. Internally there is tributes to the players and staff that lost their lives and the and the team line up which was normally printed on the centre page had been left blank.
